How hair transplant techniques differ

  • FUE (follicular unit extraction): hair follicles are taken one by one from the back or sides of the scalp and placed in the thinning area.
  • DHI (direct hair implantation): a variation of FUE in which the follicles are placed with a pen-like tool. Clinics describe it in different ways, so ask exactly what is done.
  • FUT (follicular unit transplantation): a thin strip of scalp is removed from the donor area and divided into grafts. It leaves a linear scar.
  • SMP (scalp micropigmentation): a cosmetic tattooing technique that gives the look of closely cut hair. It does not grow hair.

Who may be suited to a transplant

Suitability depends on how much donor hair you have, the pattern of your hair loss, your age and your general health. Only a surgeon can assess this. Hair loss that is still progressing may also need ongoing medical treatment.

What affects the price

  • The number of grafts needed
  • The technique used
  • The surgeon’s experience
  • The clinic’s facilities
  • Whether follow-up and aftercare are included

Prices vary a lot between clinics, so ask for a written quote that shows what is included. We only show prices where a clinic has provided them. See our cost guide for more.

Before you book, check

  • The surgeon’s registration with the Malaysian Medical Council, and specialist status where it applies.
  • That the clinic is licensed by the Ministry of Health.
  • Who actually performs the procedure, and who is present throughout.
  • The full price, what’s included, and the aftercare.
  • Both the risks and realistic results. Be careful of any clinic that guarantees results.

Risks to know about

Possible risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, swelling, numbness, uneven results and temporary shedding of transplanted hair. New growth often takes many months to show. A doctor should explain these risks before you agree to anything.

Hair transplant FAQ

Is a hair transplant permanent?

Transplanted hair usually comes from areas less prone to hair loss, so it often lasts. Your remaining natural hair can still thin over time. Ask a surgeon how this applies to you.

What is the difference between FUE and DHI?

Both move individual follicles. DHI uses a special implanter pen to place them, while standard FUE usually makes small channels first. Clinics use the terms differently, so ask what is done in practice.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Malaysia?

It depends on the clinic, technique and number of grafts. Ask each clinic for a written quote. See our cost guide.

How do I check that a surgeon is qualified?

You can check a doctor’s registration with the Malaysian Medical Council and specialist status with the National Specialist Register. Also ask to see the clinic’s licence.

Do I need to see a doctor first?

Yes. A consultation lets a doctor check the cause of your hair loss, your donor area and whether surgery is suitable.
