When to see a dermatologist

  • Your hair loss is sudden or comes in patches.
  • Your scalp is itchy, flaky, red or painful.
  • You have scaly patches, sores or signs of infection on your scalp.
  • Hair loss comes with other symptoms, such as tiredness or skin changes.
  • You’ve tried home care for about 3 months without a change.

Conditions a dermatologist may look at

  • Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Scalp psoriasis
  • Fungal infections of the scalp
  • Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss)
  • Shedding after illness, stress or medication
  • Scarring forms of hair loss

A doctor can examine your scalp, ask about your history and, where needed, arrange tests. Treatment depends on the cause.

Dermatologist or general clinic?

A dermatologist is a doctor with specialist training in skin conditions. Many general and aesthetic clinics also treat hair loss. Whichever you choose, check the doctor’s registration with the Malaysian Medical Council and, for specialists, the National Specialist Register.

Dermatology FAQ

Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist?

Requirements differ by clinic and by your insurance or employer scheme. Ask when you book.

What happens at a first visit?

Usually the doctor asks about your hair loss and health, looks at your scalp and hair, and may suggest tests or treatment. Ask the clinic what to expect and the likely cost.

Is this different from a hair transplant clinic?

Yes. Dermatology clinics focus on finding the cause and treating conditions. Transplant clinics focus on surgery. See our hair transplant clinics page.

Can a dermatologist treat dandruff and an itchy scalp?

Yes, scalp conditions are part of what dermatologists treat. Ask the clinic whether it handles your specific problem.
